REVIEW USJohn Hughes, MAMFT completed his B.S. from Georgia State University and later his M.S.L.S. from Clark Atlanta University. He then served as an academic Librarian for 20 years, during which he furthered his studies and research in philosophy and religion, psychology, counseling, and marriage and family therapy.
16 of those years were spent specifically working with faculty and students in researching numerous aspects of psychology and conducting his own research in the application of mindfulness and spirituality in psychotherapy. This lead to conducting lectures, presentations, and workshops in these areas, as well as leading meditation groups.
He completed his M.A.M.F.T. at Richmont Graduate University in 2016, and further developed his skills during internship, working in adult and geriatric programs at Emory Healthcare’s, Wesley Woods Transitions Outpatient Behavioral Health Program. During this period, he established his passion for working with this population and their unique challenges, including stress and anxiety, depression, family and relationship challenges, grief and loss, and life transitions.
To do so, John utilizes techniques from several theories, always tailoring them to the circumstances and needs of each individual, couple, or family. He approaches each person holistically and meets them where they are, in the greater context of their life. It is his privilege to help them identify their strengths and understand how they can utilize them to address their challenges and work toward increased wellness and greater quality of life.
In his work, John specifically utilizes techniques from: Positive Psychology, Systems Theory, Person-Centered Therapy, Strengths-Based Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Psychotherapy (eg. ACT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), Motivational Interviewing, and Life Coaching.
